WHO Regional Director for Europe Dr Hans Henri P. Kluge and Director of the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) Dr Elisabete Weiderpass have issued a timely joint statement to the European Parliament. A specialized committee of the European Parliament is dealing with the European response to the heavy burden of non-communicable diseases, such as cancer and heart diseases, and the risk factors causing the NCDs burden, such as alcohol and tobacco. But the wording of the Own Initiative Report on NCDs is heavily lobbied by the alcohol industry. And alcohol lobbyists have managed to water down language in the report on alcohol harm and alcohol policy solutions.
Dr Kluge and Dr Weiderpass make two recommendations to the European Parliament in their timely statement.
Movendi International President Kristina Sperkova shares her assessment of the timely WHO statement and the lobby onslaught of Big Alcohol. And Movendi International members are calling on their elected representatives in the European Parliament to put people’s well-being before the private profits interests of alcohol companies.
