Where in Europe Is Alcohol Consumption Falling and Which Countries Face Rising Alcohol Consumption?

Reports reveal a gradual decrease in alcohol consumption in the EU and the wider WHO European Region. In the EU, overall alcohol consumption per person aged 15 and above fell by about 23% between 1980 to 2020.
Despite the overall decrease in alcohol use in the EU and the wider WHO European Region, alcohol use rates remain very high. Europe is still the region of the world with the highest levels of alcohol consumption per person and the highest levels of deaths due to alcohol.
That is why alcohol policy making should be a priority in Europe. But when there is a political opportunity to make progress, alcohol industry interference against evidence-based, high-impact measures that would reduce alcohol use and protect people from harm.
