Water for Profits, Not for People: How Big Alcohol is Draining Mexico Dry

The alcohol industry extracts more than 243 million m3 of water annually in Mexico – the equivalent of the water consumption of all the inhabitants of Mexico City for 72 days.
In Mexico, 12 million people lack access to drinking water. 
Communities in Yucatan, Coahuila, Oaxaca and Baja California are experiencing water shortages, while alcohol industry extraction continues.
The human right to water is essential for a dignified life and should therefore be treated as a social rather than an economic good, write Alejandro Calvillo, Luis Alonso Robledo, and Norberto Francisco Hernández-Llanes.
