Vietnam: Alcohol Excise Tax Increase Risks Getting Delayed Until 2027

Vietnam’s Ministry of Finance proposes delaying the Special Consumption Tax (SCT) increase on alcohol and beer from 2026 to 2027, according to Báo Công Thương. The alcohol industry’s delay and deception tactics are on full display in Vietnam – something they have done before.
However, experts warn this delay endangers much needed alcohol policy action as Vietnam faces rising alcohol harm, with per capita use soaring 90% between 2010 and 2017. Alcohol is linked to 12% of all deaths and costs 3.3% of GDP annually. Without urgent and evidence-based action, these harms and costs will grow.
